Short answer

State vehicle tax rules changed more in the last two years than most reference pages have caught up with: Louisiana raised its state rate to 5%, Kentucky doubled its temp-tag window and Minnesota went from 31 to 60 days, Oklahoma cut dealer tags to 10 days, and doc fee caps moved in Indiana, Missouri, and Louisiana on CPI schedules while Minnesota stepped its cap up by statute. Each change below links the official source it was verified against, and the stale figure you'll still find elsewhere is called out.

Rule change questions

Louisiana raised its state rate from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025, set through 2029. Most other recent changes are to temp tags and doc fee caps rather than headline rates.

Kentucky doubled from 30 to 60 days (June 2025), Minnesota's nonresident permit went from 31 to 60 days, Massachusetts extended nonresident plates from 9 to 15 days (January 2024), and Oklahoma cut dealer tags from 30 to 10 days under its pre-registration system (September 2024).

Because several of these changes are recent and the superseded figures are still printed in official training pages and older publications. Each row above links the current controlling source; the state pages carry the full rule.

Every entry is tied to a fact verified against the official source shown, most recently August 30, 2026. The state pages show a per-fact verification date.
